Beauty and the Beast Production

Dramatic productions in the local playhouses are not something we frequent, but when friends asked us to photograph the dress rehearsal of Beauty and the Beast, we jumped at the chance. Kirk, Tanya, and daughter Noelle all had prominent parts in the play.

Kirk played the both the Prince, before he became the Beast, and the evil Monsieur D’Arque. Tanya played the Enchantress, showcasing her amazing dancing talent, and also played the Wardrobe. Noelle was part of the townspeople and the Rug. Ever tried to cartwheel while sandwiched between two rugs? Noelle did and it was amazing!

The costumes were stunningly beautiful as well as creatively crafted. The theater was electrified with energy from the cast and crew as they rehearsed…..performed….sang…..danced in readiness for opening night.

It was an enchanted evening.

To Kirk, Tanya, and Noelle:

Wow. We were so amazed at your talent for drama, singing, and dance throughout the entire show! Thank you so much for asking us to photography you in the Beauty and the Beast production. It was such a delightful performance. Hope to see you in another production in the future.

Break a leg,

Awesome Family Portrait Backgrounds

family portrait outdoor photography backgroundsWhat does an outdoor portrait photographer love more than soft cloud cover, light wind, perfect temperature, and no rain? Awesome backgrounds.

So….just what makes a background great? Here are the top 3 conditions we like to see when choosing a location:

#1 — It Compliments Your Subject…..

…with Light – Soft backlighting such as green trees bathed in sunshine or light filtering through from behind that adds rim light on hair is something pros seek out. It flatters the subjects’ faces.

An awesome background draws attention TO your subject, not away. In other words, the background remains the background and does not become a distraction for the viewer.

#2 – It adds Subtle Interest…..

…with Texture – A fence line that adds perspective and dimension, a brick wall that entices your viewer to reach out and touch the image or foliage in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors is more engaging than a plain background.

Texture from fall leaves on the ground and weathered barn wood along with softly lit buildings in the distance add subtle interest but not enough to distract from the family in the portrait.

#3 – It Adds to the Story…..

…with Details – The background has just enough details to compliment the subjects’ clothing, pose, and expression becoming part of the story being told from where they are to what they are celebrating to memories being made.

From red brick buildings to barns to split rail fences to colorful foliage to flowing water, Nauvoo has an abundance of beautiful settings for family portraits. One of the many reasons we love photography here. There’s a great background around every corner.

Nauvoo Fall Family Portraits and Sweet Engagement

Fall days in Nauvoo can be ever-so-cold-and-windy but have spectacular color for photography. Tina and Shane’s family braved the chilly air and smiled as if it were perfectly warm outside. The weather conditions may have created more reason for closeness but that was easy for this tight-knit family.

Traveling with the family was a neighbor who we found was more than just the girl-next-door for one of the young men in the family…..while on the Temple grounds, he hit one knee and proposed marriage!

We didn’t know this was coming until the last few seconds and were able to snap a few shots of the proposal. Sweet tears and excitement followed from the soon to be bride, as well as the entire family. It was a treat to capture this memorable time for both the couple and his family.

Here are a few of the many shots taken that day.

To Tina and Shane,

You can’t tell by these photos that blankets were in use between shots! You were all so fun to photograph and troopers in the cold weather. Thank you for letting us capture the memories of both your trip to Nauvoo and the engagement. May you continue to receive rich blessings in life!

All the best!!

Patty and Bruno’s Nauvoo Family Reunion

Photographers know working with kids requires both humor and speed. Why? Kids have a very unique way of letting you know they are bored or just plain tired of posing for portraits…..they simply stop smiling, no matter what wonderful incentives are promised or crazy antics are tried.

The image below was one of the 1st taken. The 2nd was one was one of the last ones taken. You can tell by the last image our bag of tricks had run out. The kids are done.  However, while maybe not smiling as much, the kiddos are still adorable because expression beats perfection every time. (Blog post by that name HERE.)

Patty and Bruno’s family was super sweet and from the newest addition to the tween, we adored the kiddos. Here are a few shots from their reunion session.
